MĀTANGA RARANGA

Ngāpuhi-nui-tonu, Te Whakatōhea.

Born and raised in Te Tai Tokerau she began weaving at 12 and has dedicated her life to weaving, teaching, and the transmission of rāranga, whatu, tāniko and tukutuku. With 47 years of weaving experience, Henare holds a postgraduate degree and a master's degree in Māori Visual Arts from Massey University and delivers the Raranga strand of the Maunga Kura Toi Bachelor of Māori Art programme at NorthTec in Te Tai Tokerau. Her work is grounded in tikanga Māori and focuses on nurturing emerging artists by integrating technical excellence, cultural knowledge, and creative practice. Throughout her career, she has led numerous wānanga, community projects, and marae projects, including assisting with and creating design, tukutuku, and whāriki in collaboration with whānau, hapu, and iwi. She was awarded the NorthTec Research Excellence Award 2025 and currently serves as lead Mātanga for Te Tira Ranga, supporting Toi Ngapuhi, and Chair of Te Roopū Raranga Whatu o Aotearoa, contributing to the advancement and revitalisation of Māori weaving throughout Aotearoa.
